New Capital Theatre in West London delays opening and pulls Dirty Dancing debut

The opening of the Capital Theatre at Westfield London has been postponed from autumn 2024 to next year due to ongoing planning permission delays. The venue’s planned revival of Dirty Dancing has been withdrawn and will instead open in the West End.

The Capital Theatre, a new West London venue featuring a purpose-built 620-seat auditorium, has suffered a significant delay. Designed by the same team behind the Bridge Theatre and the Kit Kat Club, the venue was scheduled to launch with a revival of Dirty Dancing but has now pushed back its opening to 2025.

A statement on the theatre’s website attributes the delay to planning permission issues with Hammersmith and Fulham Borough Council, describing the situation as beyond the producer’s control. The producers have pulled the Dirty Dancing production from the Capital Theatre’s initial schedule.

The West End will now host the opening of the Dirty Dancing revival instead, with further details available through the production’s official channels. The producers have assured that ticket holders for the Capital Theatre will be contacted and offered special access to the Prince Edward Theatre’s Dirty Dancing season.

The statement emphasised that the delay has no impact on the UK and Ireland tour of Dirty Dancing, which is currently running to summer 2027 and has received critical acclaim. Information about the tour remains available on dirtydancingonstage.co.uk.

The Capital Theatre’s auditorium design was developed by the creative team responsible for notable London venues, promising a distinctive space once completed. However, delays in local council approval have halted progress and postponed the theatre’s debut.

Producers have apologised for the inconvenience and thanked audiences for their patience during the theatre’s construction phase. New dates for the Capital Theatre’s Dirty Dancing production will be announced “in due course.”
