New Off-Broadway Revival of Spring Awakening Directed by Danya Taymor
Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s musical Spring Awakening is set for a new Off-Broadway revival in New York, directed by Tony Award winner Danya Taymor. The production promises to revisit the celebrated show’s themes of youth and freedom this autumn.
Spring Awakening, based on Frank Wedekind’s 1891 play, explores a group of teenagers navigating their emotions under a repressive society. The musical features standout numbers such as “Totally F**ked,” “Mama Who Bore Me,” and “The Song of Purple Summer.”
The original Broadway production opened at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in December 2006, starring Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, and John Gallagher Jr. It received eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score, and Featured Actor, and later toured North America in 2008.
The show also has a notable UK history, with a 2009 opening at London’s Lyric Hammersmith followed by a West End transfer to the Novello Theatre. Subsequent revivals occurred on Broadway in 2015 and London in 2021, alongside a concert version staged in London in 2024.
This new revival will be helmed by Danya Taymor, known for John Proctor is the Villain, with choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall and music supervision by Or Matias. Open call auditions are set for 10 and 11 July, with further details to be announced on the production’s social media channels.
The revival will play Off-Broadway in New York this autumn, though the venue remains to be confirmed. It marks the latest iteration in a production history that continues to revisit the early struggles of adolescence through rock music and frank storytelling.
