Sandra Oh’s The Misanthrope to be screened in cinemas via National Theatre Live
National Theatre Live has announced that The Misanthrope, starring Sandra Oh in her National Theatre debut, will be released in cinemas. The adaptation by Martin Crimp, directed by Indhu Rubasingham, reimagines Molière’s classic with a contemporary focus.
The Misanthrope will play in cinemas from 22 September following its run at the National Theatre’s Lyttelton stage from 16 June to 1 August, with a press night on 23 June. The production stars Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh alongside Paul Chahidi and Abigail Cruttenden.
Martin Crimp, known for his recent adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac, has transformed Molière’s play into contemporary verse. The adaptation shifts the central figure from Alceste to Alice, a novelist who rejects superficial kindness and respect, exploring themes of private relationships and public debate in today’s world.
The production is directed by Indhu Rubasingham and represents Sandra Oh’s first performance at the National Theatre. Oh expressed excitement about reaching wider audiences through National Theatre Live, praising its role in making theatre accessible globally.
National Theatre Live’s cinema release extends the life of productions beyond the stage, enabling audiences far beyond the UK to experience the work. The Misanthrope’s release continues this practice, following a run at the National Theatre and bringing a modern reworking of a classic French play to a broad audience.
