English Touring Theatre unveils 2026/27 season featuring Romeo and Juliet tour

English Touring Theatre has revealed its 2026/27 season, which includes new productions of Romeo and Juliet and Pericles alongside original works exploring contemporary issues. The season spans venues across the UK and Europe.

The season launches in September 2026 with Application 39 by Ahmed Masoud, premiering at Bristol Old Vic. This speculative fiction play follows two municipal IT workers in Gaza who disrupt a bid to host the 2048 Olympic Games, before touring to Theatre Royal Stratford East and other locations.

Next, an adaptation of Max Porter’s novel Lanny, adapted by Bea Roberts and directed by Nancy Medina, will run at Bristol Old Vic from October to November 2026. The play centres on a village shaped by folklore and memory, featuring a supernatural listener within the landscape.

In January 2027, Chelsea Walker’s new production of Romeo and Juliet will open at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh. The production then tours to Leeds Playhouse, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, and Nottingham Playhouse, concluding in May.

Richard Twyman will direct the premiere of Pericles, a new version by Sami Ibrahim inspired by Shakespeare’s play. Set across Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, and Libya, it follows a family separated by conflict. The production will play at Bristol Old Vic in early 2027 and perform in Luxembourg in April.

The season closes in June 2027 with 12 Letters to My Name by Lettie Precious, a co-production with Sheffield Theatres and Graeae staged in Sheffield. The play explores the experiences of two young people newly arrived in England navigating identity and belonging.

Alongside its production slate, English Touring Theatre announced “The New Classics”, a partnership with Guildhall to commission adaptations of existing works for student performance and future tours, reflecting a commitment to nurturing new theatrical voices.
