New Vic Theatre announces autumn season with Russell Kane’s Romeo and Juliet

The New Vic Theatre in Newcastle-under-Lyme has revealed its autumn season as part of its 40th anniversary year, featuring Russell Kane’s stage debut in a reimagined Romeo and Juliet. The season includes a mix of new productions and revivals across late 2026 and early 2027.

The season opens on 17 September 2026 with a co-production of Romeo and Juliet created with theatre company Not Too Tame. Directed by their artistic director Jimmy Fairhurst, the adaptation presents the iconic lovers meeting in their 40s, offering a fresh take on the classic Shakespearean tragedy. Russell Kane will play Romeo, marking the comedian’s first role on stage. The production runs until 10 October.

Following this, the theatre will stage the world premiere of Gladstone Girls from 6 to 27 February 2027. Written by Rachel Shenton and produced with Slick Films, the play is set in Stoke-on-Trent and centres on pottery workers whose weekly “Curl Friday” tradition is threatened when management intervenes. The story was originally developed as a podcast before being adapted for the stage.

The festive season features a revival of The Borrowers, a 2014 adaptation directed by the New Vic’s artistic director Theresa Heskins. The production explores the adventures of Arrietty and her family living beneath the floorboards, venturing into the human world. This show runs from 13 November 2026 to 23 January 2027.

The New Vic Theatre’s autumn season goes on general sale on 25 March. It builds on the venue’s reputation for combining contemporary storytelling with community-rooted narratives and sharp adaptations.

These productions underscore the theatre’s commitment to diverse theatrical experiences, ranging from classical reinventions to locally inspired new work. The inclusion of a high-profile stage debut alongside the revival of a much-loved family tale highlights the company’s varied artistic vision.
