Pitlochry Festival Theatre casts Siobhán Redmond and Forbes Masson in Beckett’s Happy Days
Pitlochry Festival Theatre has revealed the full cast for its upcoming production of Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days, featuring Siobhán Redmond and Forbes Masson. The play is part of Alan Cumming’s first season as artistic director at the Scottish venue, marking a significant moment in its autumn programme.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre will present Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days in the Studio from 18 September to 10 October. Siobhán Redmond will take on the central role of Winnie, while Forbes Masson joins as her husband, Willie.
The two actors have recently performed together in The High Life – The Musical at the National Theatre of Scotland. Masson is also nearing the end of his run in King Lear at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, concluding this Saturday, 1 August.
Happy Days was written in 1960 and had its premiere off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre on 17 September 1961. The play is often described as a “surreal masterpiece” and explores human choices through Winnie’s increasingly fraught existence, presenting a paradox in which she is both overwhelmed and yet seemingly happier than ever.
Roxana Silbert directs the production, with a creative team that includes Emma Bailey as designer, Colin Grenfell on lighting, and Hugh Barbour as sound designer.
This staging of Happy Days continues Pitlochry’s tradition of engaging with challenging and canonical works, reflecting a mix of classic and contemporary tastes under Alan Cumming’s artistic leadership.
