Stephen Daldry’s An Inspector Calls to tour UK and Ireland in 2027
Stephen Daldry’s acclaimed revival of J B Priestley’s An Inspector Calls is set to tour the UK and Ireland from September 2027, following successful runs in 2024 and 2025. The production’s return offers a chance for a new generation to engage with its enduring social themes.
Stephen Daldry’s version of An Inspector Calls will embark on a UK and Ireland tour beginning at Alexandra Palace Theatre in London from 3 to 25 September 2027. The tour will then continue with stops across the country and Ireland, including Belfast, Dublin, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and more, concluding at Leeds Grand Theatre in late May 2028.
The play focuses on the Birling family, whose dinner is disrupted by Inspector Goole’s investigation into the death of a young woman. This inquiry exposes hidden truths, challenging the family members’ perceptions of their own lives and responsibilities.
Originally staged at the National Theatre in 1992, Daldry’s production has garnered significant acclaim, winning 19 major awards such as four Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards. It has been viewed by over six million theatre-goers worldwide since its debut.
Daldry reflected on the production’s longevity, saying: “When we first created An Inspector Calls at the National Theatre in 1992, none of us could have imagined that we would still be touring the production 35 years later. It’s extraordinary that Priestley’s play continues to resonate so strongly with audiences.”
The creative team for the 2027 tour includes designer Ian MacNeil, lighting designer Rick Fisher, composer Stephen Warbeck, and associate director Charlotte Peters. The production is presented by PW Productions.
With its message still relevant decades after its first staging, Daldry’s An Inspector Calls remains a significant theatrical work in the UK’s cultural landscape, continuing to provoke reflection on social responsibility through its touring presence.
