Jonathan Groff to star in solo play The Amish Project on Broadway
Jonathan Groff will return to Broadway next February to star in Jessica Dickey’s solo play The Amish Project. The production revisits a tragic 2006 school shooting in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, close to where Groff grew up.
Jonathan Groff, the Tony Award-winning actor currently performing at the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon, is set to begin performances in The Amish Project at the Broadhurst Theatre on 10 February. The solo play, written by Jessica Dickey, explores the 2006 shooting in a one-room Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which resulted in the deaths of ten girls under the age of 13.
Groff’s connection to the story is personal, as he grew up in a Mennonite family near the site of the tragedy. The Amish Project first premiered at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2008 and has since been staged internationally.
The production at the Broadhurst Theatre will be directed by Sarna Lapine. Further details about the creative team and run dates are yet to be announced.
This engagement marks Groff’s return to the Broadway stage following his acclaimed work in both musical and dramatic roles. The play’s examination of faith, tragedy, and healing adds a serious new dimension to his theatre repertoire.
The Amish Project joins a growing trend of plays that tackle real-life tragedies through intimate storytelling, often in solo formats that deepen the emotional impact.
The theatre community awaits the full announcement with interest, as audiences will have the chance to see Groff embody a role deeply tied to his own background and a significant moment in American history.
