Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Ballad of Johnny and June about?
The musical follows the real-life love story of country music icons Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, tracing their journeys from childhood and early careers through their meeting on the Grand Ole Opry stage, battles with addiction and fame, and ultimately their enduring partnership, often told from the perspective of their son John Carter Cash and set against many of their most famous songs.
Where is the show performed in Cardiff?
All Cardiff performances take place at the New Theatre, a central city venue with a traditional auditorium layout that offers a variety of seating options and price bands across the stalls, circle, and upper levels.
How long does the show last and is there an interval?
The running time for the touring production is expected to be around two and a half hours including an interval, which is typical for a large-scale musical biography and allows time for a wide range of songs and scenes from the couple’s lives.
Has The Ballad of Johnny and June won any awards?
The Ballad of Johnny and June began with North American premieres where it received strong reviews and picked up regional theatre recognition and award nominations, particularly praising its lead performances and direction, helping to establish its reputation before launching the major UK and Ireland tour.
Do I need to know Johnny Cash’s music to enjoy the show?
You do not need to be an expert on Johnny Cash to enjoy the musical because it is written as a clear, character-driven story about love, redemption, and resilience, with the familiar hits acting as a soundtrack that fans will recognise while newcomers discover the songs through the drama on stage.
What kind of music and songs are in the musical?
The show features many of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s signature songs alongside additional material, blending country, rockabilly, and heartfelt ballads, so you can expect classics like driving train rhythms, love duets, and reflective numbers that mirror different stages of their relationship.
Is the show suitable for children and families?
The musical is generally recommended for teenagers and adults because it deals honestly with themes such as substance abuse, marital strain, and emotional conflict, so families should consider the maturity of younger audience members when deciding whether to bring them.
How can I get cheap tickets for the Cardiff dates?
To find cheaper tickets, look at midweek performances rather than Saturday night, check different seating areas such as the upper circle or side blocks, keep an eye on special offers from the theatre’s mailing list, and compare prices from authorised ticket sellers who may run short-term promotions or early booking deals.
Are there discounts or offers available?
Discounts can include early bird offers, occasional percentage reductions on selected performances, group rates for larger bookings, and concessions for certain age groups, so it is worth checking for family tickets, under-26 or student deals, and asking the box office which performances currently have promotions.
Can I buy last-minute or same-day tickets?
Last-minute tickets are often available at the New Theatre’s box office on the day of the show, and you may sometimes find returns or single seats at lower prices for less busy performances, though popular evenings can sell out so flexible theatregoers often choose midweek shows for the best value.
What is the best way to travel to the New Theatre in Cardiff?
The New Theatre is located in Cardiff city centre within walking distance of major bus routes and Cardiff Queen Street station, and if you are driving it is sensible to plan a route to a nearby car park, allow extra time for rush-hour traffic, and check parking charges and closing times so you are not rushed after the final curtain.
