Frequently Asked Questions
When is The Ballad of Johnny and June in Dublin?
The Ballad of Johnny and June is scheduled to run in Dublin at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from Tuesday 31 March to Saturday 11 April 2026, with performances spread across weekday evenings and multiple matinees during the engagement.
Where is the show performed in Dublin?
All Dublin performances take place at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in the Docklands area, a modern venue with spacious foyers, comfortable seating, and a range of price bands across its different levels so you can choose a view and budget that suit you.
What is The Ballad of Johnny and June about?
The musical tells the true love story of country music legends Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash, following their childhoods, early careers, first meeting, struggles with addiction and fame, and their eventual redemption and lasting partnership, with their son John Carter Cash often guiding the story as narrator.
Has The Ballad of Johnny and June won any awards?
The Ballad of Johnny and June premiered in North America before touring, where it earned strong reviews, regional theatre awards, and nominations that highlighted its performances, direction, and live band, helping to build its reputation ahead of the large-scale UK and Ireland tour.
Do I need to know Johnny Cash’s music to enjoy the show?
You do not need to be a long-time Johnny Cash fan to enjoy the musical because it is written as a clear, emotional story about love, resilience, and second chances, with the classic songs used to support the drama so newcomers discover the music while fans enjoy hearing familiar hits live.
What songs and musical style can I expect?
The show features many of Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s signature songs alongside additional material, mixing country, rockabilly, gospel, and heartfelt ballads, so you can expect driving rhythms, rousing duets, and reflective numbers that mirror the highs and lows of their relationship.
How long does the show last and is there an interval?
The running time for the touring production is expected to be around two and a half hours including an interval, which is typical for a major musical biography and allows time for both the key life events and a generous selection of songs to be included.
Is the show suitable for children and families?
The production is generally recommended for teenagers and adults because it includes mature themes such as substance abuse, marital conflict, and intense emotional scenes, and the theatre’s child policy usually requires younger audience members to be accompanied by an adult and does not permit very young children or babies in the auditorium.
How can I get cheap tickets for the Dublin dates?
To find cheaper tickets, look at midweek performances rather than weekend evenings, compare different seating areas such as the upper levels or side sections, sign up to the theatre’s mailing list for presales and offers, and check multiple authorised ticket sellers for early booking discounts or special promotions.
Are there discounts or special offers available?
Discounts may include advance booking offers, occasional percentage reductions on selected dates, group rates for larger parties, and concessions for certain age groups, so it is worth checking for student, under-26, senior, or family pricing and asking the box office which performances currently have the best deals.
Can I buy last-minute or same-day tickets?
Last-minute tickets are often available if a performance has not sold out, and you may sometimes find returns or single seats at attractive prices, but popular evenings and Saturday shows can be very busy, so the best value is usually found by being flexible on dates and choosing midweek performances.
What is the best way to travel to Bord Gáis Energy Theatre?
The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre is easy to reach by public transport, with nearby bus and rail connections and a short walk from central Dublin, while drivers should plan ahead for city traffic, choose a nearby car park, and allow extra time before the show to park and make their way to the auditorium without rushing.
