Richard Coles’ Murder Before Evensong to debut at Watermill Theatre in 2026
The Watermill Theatre will stage the world premiere of Murder Before Evensong, a new play adapted from Richard Coles’ novel. Set in a quiet village shaken by murder, the production opens in September 2026 and explores community secrets and suspicion.
Murder Before Evensong will run at the Watermill Theatre from 25 September to 14 November 2026. The play is based on Richard Coles’ Canon Clement series, with the story set in 1988 in the village of Champton, where life revolves around St Mary’s Church.
The narrative follows Canon Daniel Clement and his family as a murder unsettles the parish. As suspicion spreads, Daniel becomes involved in the investigation, revealing hidden tensions within village life.
The stage adaptation has been penned by the Watermill’s joint CEO and artistic director Paul Hart alongside Shaun McKenna. Hart and McKenna previously collaborated on the theatre’s 2023 production of The Lord of the Rings.
Casting and the full creative team for Murder Before Evensong have yet to be announced. The theatre will also host An Audience with Richard Coles on 16 October 2026 during the play’s run, featuring a discussion and book signing.
Proceeds from the event will support the Watermill Theatre’s work. The production reflects on community and the often concealed conflicts that underpin rural parish life.
