Fighting With My Family to be adapted as stage musical with Jon Brittain and Miranda Cooper
The 2019 film Fighting With My Family is being developed into a stage musical, with a creative team that includes Olivier Award-winning playwright Jon Brittain and Brit Award-winning songwriter Miranda Cooper. This adaptation brings the true story of WWE superstar Paige to the theatre.
Fighting With My Family, the 2019 film directed and written by Stephen Merchant, is being transformed into a stage musical. The original movie follows Saraya Knight, also known as Paige, who rises from a British wrestling family to pursue a career with WWE in America. The musical will explore this coming-of-age story, focusing on her journey away from home and family.
Florence Pugh originally played Paige in the film, which also starred Dwayne Johnson. The stage adaptation features a book and lyrics by Jon Brittain, music and lyrics by Miranda Cooper, and additional music by Nick Coler, who was nominated for an Ivor Novello award.
Merchant described the film as inherently musical, comparing wrestling matches to dance numbers and emphasising the story’s theatrical and emotional qualities. He said the stage version captures the humour, grit and heart of the original while feeling fresh.
Dwayne Johnson, who co-founded Seven Bucks Productions, expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the personal emotion and storytelling central to wrestling. He praised Merchant’s work and expects the musical to be an “absolute blast” for theatre audiences.
Fighting With My Family is the first musical produced by Tilted Musicals, working alongside Seven Bucks Productions, Merchant, Kevin Misher and Birmingham Hippodrome. Closed workshops of the show will take place this year.
A public presentation is scheduled for 2027, although further production details and a venue are yet to be confirmed. This stage musical aims to bring the high-energy and heartfelt story of wrestling to a live theatrical audience, building on the film’s success.
