Michael Sheen and Callum Scott Howells to star in Amadeus revival in Cardiff and London

Michael Sheen and Callum Scott Howells will lead a new production of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus, opening at the New Theatre Cardiff in March 2027 before transferring to London’s Noël Coward Theatre. The revival marks Welsh National Theatre’s West End debut and the first major staging of the play in over a decade.

The production of Amadeus will run at the New Theatre Cardiff from 9 to 27 March 2027. It will then transfer to the Noël Coward Theatre in London for a 16-week season running from 17 April to 7 August. The revival is directed by Jeremy Herrin and produced by Second Half Productions in partnership with Welsh National Theatre.

Michael Sheen will portray Antonio Salieri, while Callum Scott Howells will take on the role of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This production is the first time two Welsh actors have played these roles together on stage. Sheen and Howells previously worked together on the BBC drama The Way.

Sheen has a long history with Amadeus, having played Mozart in the West End and on Broadway in the late 1990s and Salieri at the Sydney Opera House in 2022. The creative team also includes set designer Bunny Christie, costume designer Lez Brotherston, and casting director Sam Jones, with further casting yet to be announced.

Set in 1820 Vienna, Amadeus centres on Salieri’s retelling of his complex relationship with Mozart. Salieri’s admiration for Mozart’s divine talent shifts to jealousy and a determination to undermine the composer he both reveres and resents.

Herrin praised the cast, calling Sheen “a master of the stage” and expressing excitement about the pairing of Sheen and Howells. Both actors spoke about the significance of the production: Sheen described it as a “full-circle moment” and highlighted the importance of bringing Welsh National Theatre to the West End. Howells expressed enthusiasm for his role as Mozart, calling it “a dream come true.”

Tickets for the production go on general sale at 10am on 24 April, with priority booking available from 23 April. A total of 15,000 tickets priced at £30 or less will be available across both venues.

The production represents a significant milestone for Welsh National Theatre, marking its debut in the West End and collaborating with Second Half Productions, whose previous work includes the Broadway run of Every Brilliant Thing. The staging of Amadeus is the most prominent in over ten years and contributes to continued interest in Shaffer’s classic play.
