Hole! musical transfers to Soho Theatre before Edinburgh Fringe return

The acclaimed musical Hole!, created by Jake Brasch and Nadja Leonhard-Hooper, will play at London’s Soho Theatre this summer ahead of a second run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The two-hander explores apocalyptic themes through a unique blend of comedy and music.

Hole!, written and performed by the duo known as American Sing-Song, follows a strict religious sect in Nebraska as they navigate a post-apocalyptic world following an event called ‘The Great Sucking.’ The production, described as “The Book of Mormon meets The Mighty Boosh,” previously premiered at Edinburgh Fringe in 2022 and has since appeared at New York’s Public Theater.

The musical features direction from RJ Tolan with a creative team including Emmie Finckel on set design, Paige Seber on lighting, Eamon Goodman on sound, Hahnji Jang on costume design, and movement by Fringe First Award-winning clowns Xhloe and Natasha. An album of the show’s music is also available for streaming.

Producers Benjamin Nelson and David Thomas Tao lead the production alongside UK executive producers Indigo Productions. The musical will play at Soho Theatre’s main space from 17 July to 1 August before returning to Edinburgh’s Underbelly Cowbarn from 5 to 31 August.

The show made waves at its UK debut last year, earning a Popcorn Writing Award nomination and generating strong buzz among Edinburgh audiences. Indigo Productions executives James Lane and Ed McGovern noted the unusually enthusiastic response the show received and the growing intrigue surrounding it.

A full American premiere of Hole! is scheduled for next season at Playwrights Horizons, furthering the musical’s international profile. The production’s blend of dark humour, inventive staging, and fantastical storytelling marks it as an unusual and notable entry in contemporary musical theatre.
