Ian McKellen to star in reimagined King Lear at the Yard Theatre in 2026
Ian McKellen will return to the stage in Lear, a new adaptation of King Lear, staged at the Yard Theatre as part of its inaugural season in the rebuilt Hackney Wick venue. This marks a significant moment for both the celebrated actor and the theatre’s ambitious relaunch.
Ian McKellen is set to headline Lear, a reimagined version of King Lear created by playwright Simon Stephens and the Yard’s artistic director, Jay Miller. The production will open during winter 2026 at the Yard Theatre’s new Hackney Wick home, although exact dates and press night details are yet to be confirmed.
The Yard Theatre has undergone a major redevelopment, with its new building designed by Takero Shimazaki Architects, more than doubling the original space. The refurbished venue features a 220-seat auditorium alongside new artist development zones and expanded backstage facilities, with the new season launching following the venue’s opening this summer.
Jay Miller described Lear as “a beautiful meditation on what it means to give a life to the theatre” and emphasised that the piece is not a solo show. He also reflected on McKellen’s extensive history with the play, pointing out that the actor has inhabited several key roles in King Lear over the years, including Kent, Edgar, and the title character twice.
Miller praised McKellen’s commitment to the craft, saying that, even at 86, he remains “restlessly searching” and “one of the most playful actors I’ve ever met,” regularly experimenting and trying new things in rehearsals.
A brief excerpt released with the announcement hints at the production’s introspective tone. In it, McKellen contemplates his life organised around acting, responding to Lear’s reflection on mortality with the stark question, “So if I’m not acting, what’s the point?”
McKellen last portrayed King Lear on stage in 2017 at Chichester Festival Theatre, a production that subsequently transferred to the West End and New York. His collaboration with Simon Stephens includes the virtual theatre project An Ark, while Stephens’ recent credits feature Vanya, The Seagull, A Doll’s House, and Heisenberg.
The Yard Theatre, founded in 2011 and led by Miller since its inception, is positioning Lear as a key highlight of its relaunched season in the new building. Tickets for the production will be made available closer to the opening.
