Josh O’Connor leads Almeida’s revival of Golden Boy with new cast revealed

The Almeida Theatre has unveiled the cast for its upcoming revival of Clifford Odets’s Golden Boy, starring Josh O’Connor. This 1930s-set drama, directed by Sam Yates, returns with a strong ensemble and a live string quartet to explore ambition and identity.

Josh O’Connor returns to the stage in the Almeida’s revival of Golden Boy, running from 9 September to 31 October 2026, with an opening night on 15 September. The production, directed by Sam Yates, tells the story of Joe Bonaparte, a gifted young violinist drawn into the harsh world of professional boxing during the Great Depression.

Joining O’Connor are Jason Barnett, Richard Fleeshman, David Ganly, Patrick Martins, Daniel Mays, Oliver Ryan, Hayley Squires, Stanley Townsend, Zubin Varla, and Nicholas Woodeson. This ensemble supports the play’s exploration of “ambition, identity, and the high price of success,” underscored by the presence of a live string quartet on stage.

The creative team features set and costume designer Rosanna Vize, lighting designer James Farncombe, and sound designer Dan Balfour. The musical elements include composer Isobel Waller-Bridge’s original work, while Jack Phelan provides video design.

Casting is led by Jim Carnahan with children’s casting by Amy Beadel. Movement director Imogen Knight and fight director Kate Waters contribute to the physicality of the production, complemented by orchestral manager David Gallagher and dialect coach William Conacher. Associate director Yasmin Hafesji also forms part of the team.

Golden Boy, written by Clifford Odets, is an American classic that originally premiered in the 1930s, tapping into the era’s socio-economic tensions. This Almeida revival situates the play in its historical context while inviting modern audiences to reassess its themes.

Tickets for Golden Boy go on sale today, offering London theatre-goers the chance to witness O’Connor and the company’s take on this enduring work at the Almeida.
