Dominic Hill to Direct Death of a Salesman Revival at York Theatre Royal

York Theatre Royal has announced a major revival of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, directed by Dominic Hill in co-production with Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre. The production will open in March 2027, forming a key part of the theatre’s upcoming season.

York Theatre Royal will stage a new production of Death of a Salesman from 2 March to 27 March 2027, with previews starting 24 February. Following its run in York, the show will transfer to Citizens Theatre in Glasgow from 7 April to 1 May 2027. The revival will be directed by Dominic Hill, artistic director of Citizens Theatre.

Hill described the play as one of the 20th century’s most influential works, highlighting its relevance “in the age of Donald Trump’s politics of greed and toxic masculinity.” He noted the story’s focus on “an ordinary working man’s” family wrestling with expectations and forging their own paths.

York Theatre Royal will also present a revival of Tristan & Yseult in April 2027, part of a nationwide UK tour. This production is a collaboration with the Emma Rice Company and Nottingham Playhouse. The show was last seen in 2017 and features adaptation and direction by Emma Rice, with writing by Carl Grose and Anna Maria Murphy.

The Tristan & Yseult revival includes music by Stu Barker, original and updated set and costume designs by Bill Mitchell and Vikki Mortimer respectively, choreography and intimacy coordination by Etta Murfitt, sound design by Simon Baker, and lighting by Malcolm Rippeth. It will run in York from 7 to 17 April 2027.

Paul Crewes, CEO of York Theatre Royal, expressed enthusiasm for the season’s highlights. He praised the collaboration with Citizens Theatre on Death of a Salesman and recalled fond memories of producing Tristan and Yseult with Emma Rice during his time at Kneehigh.

Alongside these productions, the theatre’s upcoming season includes a revival of Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad featuring Amelia Bullmore, a youth theatre production of Wendy and Peter Pan, and the annual pantomime, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The programme also incorporates dance performances and visiting theatre shows.
