Jack Tarlton and Jessica Hardwick cast in 1984 tour at Citizens Theatre
The full cast for Dominic Hill’s new stage adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 has been announced ahead of its opening at Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre next month. The production will tour Dundee, Aberdeen and Edinburgh, bringing Orwell’s dystopian tale to audiences across Scotland.
Dominic Hill’s adaptation of 1984 opens at the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow on 29 August, with a press night scheduled for 3 September. The production, adapted by Chris Hannan, is a co-production between the Citizens Theatre, Dundee Rep Theatre and the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh.
Jack Tarlton, known for Outlander, takes on the role of Winston Smith, acting opposite award-winning Jessica Hardwick, whose credits include Gush, as Julia. Irene MacDougall, who appeared in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, plays the enigmatic O’Brien.
The cast is further completed by Irene Allan, Neshla Caplan, Robert Jack, Peter Collins and Zrey Sholapurkar, each performing multiple roles. The narrative centres on Winston and Julia’s forbidden relationship amid a totalitarian society defined by surveillance and manipulation.
Director Dominic Hill described the play as “both intimate and epic,” emphasising the company’s ability to bring “extraordinary humanity” to Orwell’s characters. He highlighted the importance of theatre in engaging with urgent ideas such as those presented in 1984.
After its run in Glasgow until 26 September, the production tours to Dundee Rep Theatre from 30 September to 10 October, then to His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen from 13 to 17 October, before concluding at the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh from 27 October to 7 November.
Details about the wider creative team, including the casting director, are yet to be confirmed. This production continues the strong Scottish tradition of adapting politically charged literature for the stage.
