Birmingham Rep’s Sweeney Todd crowns venue’s most successful musical run
Birmingham Repertory Theatre has announced its production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street achieved record box office success, becoming the venue’s most lucrative musical per performance. The six-week run attracted a diverse international audience and generated almost £1.4 million.
The Sondheim musical, directed by Birmingham Rep’s artistic director Joe Murphy, concluded on 15 August after selling 31,283 tickets at 82% capacity. The production generated nearly £1.4 million during its engagement, marking it as the theatre’s top-grossing musical based on box office income per performance.
Audiences travelled from 53 countries to see the show, representing every continent except Antarctica. Around 40% of ticket buyers were local to Birmingham and the West Midlands, while others came from across the UK, including Cornwall, Inverness, Cardiff, and Belfast.
Notably, more than 430 patrons returned to see the production multiple times, with one dedicated audience member attending 19 performances. The cast starred Ramin Karimloo as Sweeney Todd, Meow Meow as Mrs Lovett, and David Bedella as Judge Turpin.
Joe Murphy reflected on the production’s achievement, describing the success as unexpected when he chose the show for his first season at the Rep. He credited the extraordinary company, creative team, and the behind-the-scenes staff for the accomplishment.
Murphy highlighted the local craftsmanship involved, noting that the set, costumes, and props were all created by Birmingham-based artisans, and rehearsals took place at the venue. This in-house production process, he said, helped create a special atmosphere.
The production’s ability to draw such a wide-ranging audience and inspire genuine enthusiasm reflects its cultural reach and the strength of Birmingham Rep’s theatrical offering.
