Nevermore musical about Edgar Allan Poe to open at Charing Cross Theatre in 2027

The cult musical Nevermore – The Imaginary Life and Mysterious Death of Edgar Allan Poe will play at London’s Charing Cross Theatre next summer, exploring the enigmatic life and work of the American writer. Written, composed and directed by Jonathan Christenson, the production is a significant addition to the city’s theatre landscape.

Nevermore, created by Canadian company Catalyst Theatre, will run from 19 July to 9 October 2027 at Charing Cross Theatre, with a press night on 27 July. The musical delves into the life and imagination of Edgar Allan Poe, drawing inspiration from his most famous works including The Raven, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Pit and the Pendulum.

Jonathan Christenson, Catalyst’s artistic director, wrote, composed and directs the production, which combines poetic text, expressive movement, haunting music and whimsical design to explore the blurred lines between Poe’s history, memory and imagination.

Nevermore premiered in Edmonton and has since been presented across Canada and internationally. It was staged at London’s Barbican during the London International Festival of Theatre, and in 2015 had an Off-Broadway run at New World Stages in New York. The 2015 production earned three Lucille Lortel Award nominations, including one for outstanding musical.

Producer M. Kilburg Reedy, who also produced the Off-Broadway production, said returning to Nevermore is a thrilling prospect. “It’s wonderful to be bringing this best-ever version of the show to London,” said Reedy, praising the production’s visual and theatrical qualities as well as its blend of wit and darkness.

The creative team for the London production includes production designer Bretta Gerecke, choreographer Laura Krewski, sound effects designer Wade Staples, sound designer Andrew Johnson, London casting director Neil Rutherford, and orchestrator Matthew Skopyk. Photography for the original cast is by David Cooper with key art by Kurt Firla.

Casting for the 2027 London production will take place in spring 2027, with further details to be announced. The show is a co-production between MKR Entertainment Group Ltd, Martin Hummel and Catalyst Theatre.

Nevermore’s return to London highlights ongoing international interest in multifaceted theatrical works inspired by literary figures, continuing the tradition of staging productions that blend biography and imagination.
