Anne-Marie Duff to lead Helen Edmundson’s Some Woman at National Theatre

The National Theatre has announced BAFTA winner Anne-Marie Duff as the lead in the world premiere of Some Woman, Helen Edmundson’s first play since 2015. The production will open at the Dorfman Theatre in October 2026, directed by Blanche McIntyre.

Anne-Marie Duff will star as Julie Robinson in Some Woman, the new play by Helen Edmundson, opening at the National Theatre’s Dorfman from 7 October to 21 November 2026. The drama explores a moment when Robinson takes a stand after an incident on a station platform goes wrong.

The production will be directed by Blanche McIntyre, known for her recent work on Tartuffe, with set and costume designs by Robert Jones. Lucie Pankhurst serves as movement director and Martin Poile handles casting.

Some Woman marks Edmundson’s return to the stage following her 2015 historical drama Queen Anne. Edmundson is also known for the acclaimed Small Island.

The creative team and lead cast reflect a sharp focus on the production’s intense, character-driven narrative. Its premiere forms part of the National Theatre’s major upcoming season announcement.

Further casting details are expected to be revealed in due course ahead of the press night on 15 October 2026. The staging at the Dorfman highlights the National’s continued commitment to new British writing.

This announcement adds to the momentum within UK theatre to present complex female-led stories by established writers. Some Woman’s timely themes and strong creative backing draw significant attention ahead of its debut.
