Charlotte Ritchie and Sam Troughton lead cast of Cloud 9 at the National Theatre

The National Theatre has announced the cast for Caryl Churchill’s Cloud 9, marking her return to the venue since 2019. The production, directed by Dominic Cooke, will run from November 2026 to January 2027.

The National Theatre is staging Cloud 9, Caryl Churchill’s 1979 two-act play, from 2 November 2026 to 13 January 2027, with a press performance scheduled for 10 November. The production marks Churchill’s first work at the National since 2019.

Directed by Dominic Cooke, Cloud 9 satirises British imperialism while exploring the evolution of sexual politics across generations. The play is known for its sharp critique and inventive structure.

The cast includes Charlotte Ritchie, Sam Troughton, Rebecca Humphries, Eloka Ivo, Tom Mothersdale, Ellen Robertson, and Stuart Thompson. Further casting details are yet to be confirmed.

The creative team features Miriam Buether on set design, Samuel Wyer on costume design, Jessica Hung Han Yun handling lighting, and Donato Wharton in charge of sound. Naomi Downham is the casting director, while Penny Dyer and Shereen Ibrahim provide dialect and voice coaching respectively.

Staff director Max Harrison rounds out the team, contributing to the overall production process. This announcement forms part of a broader new season reveal from the National Theatre.

Cloud 9’s return highlights ongoing interest in Churchill’s work and its relevance to contemporary discussions about empire and gender. The play remains a significant example of politically charged theatre classics staged by the National.
