Burlesque the Musical London run postponed to 2027 amid production delays

The London opening of Burlesque the Musical at Arts at Marble Arch has been postponed from September 2026 to 2027, with the producers citing a strategic delay. The entertainment union BECTU has expressed concern over the impact on freelancers involved in the production.

Burlesque the Musical, adapted from the film starring Christina Aguilera and Cher, was scheduled to preview at the new 550-seat Arts at Marble Arch in September 2026 following runs in Manchester and Glasgow, as well as a sold-out 2025 limited season at the Savoy Theatre. However, organisers have now confirmed it will no longer open at Arts at Marble Arch, with a new venue and 2027 dates to be announced.

Alongside the London postponement, the UK tour of Burlesque, due to launch in Woking this week, has also been delayed until next month. Reported issues include setbacks around set delivery and construction, with photos showing cast rehearsing on a largely empty Woking stage.

Written and directed by Steven Antin, the musical centres on Ali, who journeys to New York in search of her mother and becomes immersed in an underground club scene. The production features songs by Aguilera, Sia, Diane Warren, Jess Folley and Todrick Hall, with Aguilera serving as executive producer alongside Adam Paulden, Jason Haigh-Ellery, Antin, Clint Culpepper and In Fine Company.

BECTU’s head Phillippa Childs expressed disappointment over the London postponement, highlighting the financial difficulties it will pose for freelancers due to months of lost income. She noted the union’s ongoing communication with the production company and its commitment to support members as the situation evolves.

The producers emphasised in a statement that the postponement is not a cancellation, describing it as a strategic decision to ensure the show returns to London with “fabulosity, concert-like experiential quality, sound design and razzle-dazzle” worthy of its audience. No further details about the future West End home have yet been confirmed.

Burlesque the Musical has experienced a turbulent history, including creative team changes and the departure of former director, choreographer and star Todrick Hall. Recently, BECTU requested that members involved in the production get in touch urgently regarding ongoing developments.

Cassidy Janson, who was cast as Tess in the London run, posted on Instagram acknowledging the disappointment and advising those affected to reach out. She wrote: “To anyone thinking about a career in theatre, the over used phrase ‘that’s showbiz’ genuinely applies here.”

The delay in both the London opening and the UK tour highlights the challenges productions face in mounting large-scale musicals amid logistical and financial pressures. The situation remains under close scrutiny as the company seeks a path forward.
