Cast announced for UK tour of The Haunting of Hill House stage adaptation

A new stage adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House will premiere on a UK tour this autumn, with Sian Howard, Jasper Britton, and Sophie Lenglinger confirmed among the cast. The production offers a fresh theatrical take on the beloved novel, following its recent success as a Netflix series.

The Haunting of Hill House, adapted by Olivier and BAFTA-winning writer Stef Smith, will open at Salisbury Playhouse on 11 September before touring across multiple UK venues. The national press night is scheduled for 8 October at Richmond Theatre, with the tour concluding at Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre on 14 November.

Directed by Martin Constantine, the production is produced by Wiltshire Creative alongside Theatr Clwyd and presented by Mark Puddle, Alexander “Sandy” Marshall, and Patrick Myles. The cast features Jasper Britton as Dr Montague, Jemma Churchill as Mrs Montague, Sian Howard as Mrs Dudley, Sophie Lenglinger as Theo, Robin Morrissey as Luke, and Clancy Ryan as Eleanor, with Darryl Oakley and Eleanor Hague covering as understudies.

The creative team collaborating on the production includes designer Ti Green, lighting designer Chris Davey, sound designer Johnny Edwards, and composer Harry Blake. Video design is by Duncan McLean, while Will Houstoun provides illusion design. Georgina Lamb serves as movement director, with Bobbie-Jean Henning acting as associate director and James Quaife as general manager for Luminous Entertainment Group.

The story charts a group of investigators drawn to the eerie Hill House, where their explorations provoke mysterious and unsettling events. The narrative offers a theatrical reimagining of Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel, which gained a wider audience following its recent Netflix adaptation.

Jackson, who wrote extensively during her career from 1916 to 1965, is known for her contributions to literary horror and psychological suspense. Among her works are novels such as The Road Through the Wall, Hangsaman, The Bird’s Nest, The Sundial, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle.

This latest adaptation reflects ongoing interest in Jackson’s work within theatre, continuing to inspire productions that explore her unique blend of the supernatural and the psychological. Selected dates and ticket information are currently available for the UK tour.
