Hannah Reilly’s Roleplay to transfer to Soho Theatre after Edinburgh debut

Hannah Reilly’s solo show Roleplay, described as a comedy turning psychological thriller, will move to London’s Soho Theatre following its world premiere at this year’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The production explores themes of identity and online fame through the story of a struggling feminist podcaster.

Roleplay, written and performed by Hannah Reilly, will run at Soho Theatre from 22 October to 21 November after premiering at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Directed by Paige Rattray, the one-woman play traces a podcaster who reinvents herself in pursuit of social media recognition, only to lose sight of who she really is.

The production is presented by Francesca Moody Productions in collaboration with Global Creatures. Francesca Moody Productions is known for theatre work such as Fleabag, Baby Reindeer, and Weather Girl, while Global Creatures produces musicals including Moulin Rouge! and Muriel’s Wedding.

Hannah Reilly previously created the musical comedy The Deb. Director Paige Rattray’s credits include the Lyric Hammersmith’s Fangirls and a tenure as director of new work and artistic development at Sydney Theatre Company. Roleplay was originally developed as part of the Up Late Series at Sydney’s Belvoir Street Theatre.

Speaking about the transfer, Reilly expressed excitement at bringing the show to a wider audience. Rattray described Roleplay as a play that “refuses certainty”, spotlighting complex themes around sex, power, identity, and performance, and challenging audiences to question both the protagonist and themselves.

The collaboration between Francesca Moody Productions and Global Creatures brings together creators experienced in both new writing and large-scale musical productions. The coming transfer places Roleplay within a growing field of hybrid comedic and psychological theatre.
