Dirty Dancing announces lead cast for 2026 UK and Ireland tour
The iconic musical Dirty Dancing has revealed its lead casting for a major UK and Ireland tour set to begin in summer 2026. Fans can expect familiar hits and new talent across a wide range of theatres.
Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage, written by Eleanor Bergstein who also penned the original 1987 screenplay, has announced its principal cast for the upcoming 2026 tour. Joel Benjamin will take on the role of Johnny Castle, with Charlie Varlet making her theatre tour debut as Frances “Baby” Houseman. Ellie Fergusson rounds out the lead trio as Penny Johnson.
Produced by Sydow in association with Lionsgate, Magic Hour Productions, and Ivan MacTaggart for Freedom Riders, the production will once again be directed by Federico Bellone with choreography by Austin Wilks. The show features well-known songs such as “Hungry Eyes,” “Hey! Baby,” “Do You Love Me?” and “(I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life.”
The 2026 tour will open at Milton Keynes Theatre from 25 to 29 August and then travel to venues including Liverpool Empire, Blackpool Winter Gardens, Sunderland Empire, Manchester Palace Theatre, and New Theatre Oxford. The lengthy itinerary stretches through multiple months and cities across the UK and Ireland, finishing in June 2027 at Curve Theatre in Leicester.
A previously announced London run will open later this year at the new Capital Theatre in west London, while a “reimagined” production is reportedly targeting Broadway. These developments suggest a continued expansion of the musical’s reach and audience.
Dirty Dancing remains a staple of popular culture, blending romance and nostalgia with a memorable soundtrack. The 2026 tour offers audiences a chance to experience the story live, led by a fresh but carefully chosen cast that balances newcomers with seasoned performers.
The broad range of touring venues reflects ongoing demand for large-scale musical theatre outside London, highlighting the continued vitality of regional theatres in the UK and Ireland. The extensive itinerary will move through major theatres in cities from Glasgow to Cork and Nottingham to Derry, emphasising the show’s wide appeal.
With direction and choreography in experienced hands, the production aims to maintain the spirit and energy that have made Dirty Dancing a lasting hit since its original film debut in the 1980s. The casting announcement signals a committed ensemble ready to take on fan expectations for the forthcoming tour.
