Full cast revealed for Emma Rice’s Tristan and Yseult UK tour

The Emma Rice Company has announced the complete cast for its new tour of Tristan and Yseult, which will open at Theatre Royal Bath in September. The production, co-produced with York Theatre Royal and Nottingham Playhouse, marks the first full UK tour since the show’s last staging in 2017.

Emma Rice’s adaptation of Tristan and Yseult, originally produced with Kneehigh in 2003, will begin previews at Theatre Royal Bath from 11 September, followed by an official opening night on 17 September. The production will then tour a series of UK venues before heading to New York City in November.

John Leader and Nandi Bhebhe will lead the cast as Tristan and Yseult respectively. They are joined by Matthew Churcher as Frocin, Tom Fox in the dual roles of Morholt and Brangian, and Jack Heydon as Love Spotter. Stephanie Hockley plays Whitehands, Edward Rowe takes on King Mark, and Nigel Sudarkasa also appears as Love Spotter.

The band features Pat Moran, Stu Barker, Harry Miller, Philippa Hogg, with Mary Johnson as alternate for the New York run. The creative team includes composer Stu Barker, sound designer Simon Baker, lighting designer Malcolm Rippeth, and choreographer and intimacy coordinator Etta Murfitt.

Bill Mitchell’s original set and costume design has been refreshed by Vicki Mortimer for this new production, maintaining a visual continuity with the acclaimed 2003 staging. The play itself was written by Anna Maria Murphy and Carl Grose, with adaptation and direction by Emma Rice.

After its opening run in Bath, the tour continues at Theatr Clywd in Mold, Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford, and Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. The production will then transfer to St Ann’s Warehouse in New York City for a November engagement.

The tour will recommence in early 2027 at Oxford Playhouse, Nottingham Playhouse, and York Theatre Royal, confirming a substantial UK presence. This new outing offers a fresh opportunity to experience one of Emma Rice’s signature works outside the West End.
