James Graham honoured with Services to UK Theatre Award at WhatsOnStage

Playwright and screenwriter James Graham has been recognised for his extensive contribution to British theatre with the AudienceView Services to UK Theatre Award at the 26th Annual WhatsOnStage Awards.

James Graham, known for his acclaimed plays including This House, Labour of Love, and Dear England, received the prestigious award in recognition of his longstanding impact on UK theatre. His most recent production, Make It Happen, was staged at Dundee Rep Theatre and the Edinburgh International Festival in 2025.

Originating from Nottinghamshire and educated at the University of Hull, Graham began his career at the Finborough Theatre in west London. Beyond theatre, he is a successful screenwriter, with credits such as the crime drama Sherwood, now in its third series, and adaptations like Brexit: The Uncivil War and Quiz.

Graham currently serves on the board of the National Theatre and is a prominent advocate for the arts, frequently appearing on panels and news programmes to champion culture’s national significance. His advocacy extends the influence of theatre beyond the stage into public discourse.

A two-time Olivier Award winner, Graham claimed Best New Comedy for Labour of Love and Best New Play in 2024 for Dear England, which is currently touring the UK. He was also honoured with an OBE in 2020 for his services to drama.

The award presentation was accompanied by a special video featuring industry leaders paying tribute to Graham’s achievements and contributions to UK theatre.
