Lead cast revealed for new UK production of High School Musical at Lowry
The lead cast for the upcoming UK non-replica production of Disney’s High School Musical has been announced during the 26th Annual WhatsOnStage Awards. The show is set to run at the Lowry in Salford in August 2026, marking two decades since the original film’s release.
The Hope Mill Theatre and Chris Harper Productions, in partnership with the Lowry, have revealed the principal cast for High School Musical in a live onstage announcement at this year’s WhatsOnStage Awards. The cast performed publicly for the first time, with Tobias Turley as Troy, Leonor Correia as Gabriella, Caitlin Tipping as Sharpay, and Luke Bayer as Ryan. Full casting details are yet to be confirmed.
This production will be co-directed by Hope Mill founders Joseph Houston and William Whelton, featuring a book by David Simpatico and music adapted, arranged, and produced by Bryan Louiselle. Choreography is by Aaron Renfree, and the creative team includes designers and musical directors who specialise in immersive staging and musical supervision.
Set to run from 21 August to 13 September 2026, the Lowry’s Lyric Theatre will be reconfigured to resemble a basketball court with on-stage seating and an extended playing area, enhancing the immersive experience of the show. The production will feature original songs from the film, including “Breaking Free”, “We’re All In This Together”, “Get’cha Head in the Game”, and “Stick to the Status Quo”.
High School Musical first premiered in 2006 at Stagedoor Manor Summer Theatre Camp, followed by a professional run at the Theatre of Stars in Atlanta and a US national tour in 2007 by Disney Theatrical. Its London debut came in 2008 at the Hammersmith Apollo, with numerous productions staged regionally around the world since.
The announcement highlights the continuing appeal of the High School Musical franchise, celebrating its longevity and the transition of the original film into a staged musical format devised for a UK audience. The involvement of Hope Mill Theatre aligns with their recent track record of staging bold immersive productions in the North West.
Chris Harper Productions manages the production, which has been tailored specifically for the Lowry’s venue with a fresh approach to set and audience engagement. Further casting news and production details are expected as the opening date approaches.
