Jane Eyre musical by John Caird and Paul Gordon to premiere in UK this summer

The musical adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre will have its UK premiere at Southwark Playhouse Elephant this August, 30 years after its original debut. The production offers a fresh staging of the classic story with co-direction from John Caird and Megan McGinnis.

Jane Eyre, based on Charlotte Brontë’s seminal novel, will open at Southwark Playhouse Elephant on 28 August 2026, running until 24 October. The musical is co-directed by John Caird, known for co-directing Les Misérables and the acclaimed stage adaptation of Spirited Away, alongside Broadway performer Megan McGinnis.

John Caird expressed enthusiasm for revisiting the romance in an intimate setting, praising the collaboration with McGinnis. Paul Gordon, who composed the musical, highlighted the story’s enduring appeal as a portrait of a strong female protagonist and a narrative that leaves audiences uplifted.

Producer Adam Blanshay, a longtime admirer of the musical since its inception, said the new staging aims to connect with young adults and contemporary theatre audiences by capturing the story’s emotional power. Blanshay’s partnership with Mirvish Productions, original Canadian producers of the show, carries personal significance.

Hannah Mirvish, also involved in production, reflected on her early encounters with the musical and the book during her schooling, describing the chance to bring Jane Eyre back to the stage as a joy. The team has yet to announce full casting and creative personnel.

The musical first premiered in Toronto in 1996 before opening on Broadway in 2000, where it earned five Tony Award nominations. This summer marks the 30th anniversary of the original production, prompting a renewed presentation in London.

Jane Eyre’s plot follows the journey of its titular heroine from orphanhood to adulthood, entwined with the dark secrets and dangers of Thornfield Hall and its owner Edward Rochester, central to the story’s themes of love and betrayal.
