John Lithgow’s Olivier-winning play Giant heading to cinemas worldwide
Mark Rosenblatt’s Olivier Award-winning drama Giant, starring John Lithgow, is set for an international cinema release in 900 venues across 18 countries, including the UK and the US. The film adaptation captures the tense drama before the release of Roald Dahl’s The Witches and highlights real-life controversies around the author.
Giant, which recently played to sold-out audiences on Broadway as well as at the Royal Court Theatre and in the West End, will be screened in cinemas starting 19 November 2026. The filmed version was recorded at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre.
Set during the summer of 1983, the drama imagines a fraught meeting between Roald Dahl and his publishers amid the fallout from Dahl’s public condemnation of Israel and support for Palestinians following a review on the 1982 Lebanon war.
John Lithgow leads the cast as Dahl, alongside Olivier Award winner Elliot Levey, Tony nominee Aya Cash, Rachael Stirling, Tessa Bonham Jones, and Richard Hope. The production is directed by Nicholas Hytner, a frequent collaborator with the cast and creative team.
Lithgow, Cash, Hytner, and Rosenblatt have all received Tony Award nominations for their work on this production, underscoring its critical acclaim and industry recognition.
The release will encompass 900 cinemas across 18 countries, including major markets like the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia, offering wider access to this drama originally created for the stage.
Giant continues the trend of transferring prestigious stage productions to cinema audiences, broadening access to theatre beyond its traditional walls and reaching global viewers with the story’s potent political and literary themes.
