Julia Louis-Dreyfus leads star-studded Other Desert Cities revival on Broadway

A Broadway revival of Jon Robin Baitz’s 2011 play Other Desert Cities will open at the Hudson Theatre this September, featuring an all-star cast including Julia Louis-Dreyfus in her Broadway debut. The limited engagement runs through January 2027, offering a fresh take on the political family drama.

Other Desert Cities will begin previews on 29 September at the Hudson Theatre, ahead of its official opening night on 18 October. The production is scheduled to run through Sunday 17 January 2027.

The play reunites theatre audiences with a star-studded cast led by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, making her first appearance on Broadway. She will be joined by Ed Harris, Allison Janney, Joe Keery, and Lily Rabe in a high-profile ensemble.

John Benjamin Hickey directs the revival of Baitz’s drama, which centres on a novelist, played by Rabe, who returns home to Palm Springs for Christmas. The family, consisting of former Reagan administration insiders, faces turmoil when she reveals plans to publish a provocative memoir about their past.

The original Broadway production premiered in 2011 with Stockard Channing, Stacey Keach, Judith Light, Thomas Sadoski, and Rachel Griffiths in the leading roles. Baitz’s play has been noted for its sharp examination of family politics and generational conflict.

This revival brings new prominence to a work that explores the political and personal tensions within a family set against a historical backdrop. Louis-Dreyfus’s involvement adds significant interest, given her acclaimed television career and this being her Broadway debut.

Other Desert Cities joins a trend of reviving contemporary American dramas on Broadway, with a focus on political and familial narratives. The production’s combination of a celebrated playwright and a high-calibre cast positions it as a notable event in the theatre season.
