Lionsgate to adapt psychological thriller The Housemaid for stage with Bekah Brunstetter
Lionsgate has announced plans to develop a theatrical adaptation of The Housemaid, the psychological thriller that has been a global box office hit. The stage version will be written by playwright Bekah Brunstetter and produced by Melting Pot’s Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska.
The Housemaid, originally a novel by Freida McFadden, was adapted into a feature film released in December 2025, grossing nearly $400 million worldwide. Following this success, Lionsgate is now expanding the franchise by creating a stage production.
The project is being developed by producers Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska of Melting Pot, with Bekah Brunstetter tasked to write the stage adaptation. The company is known for acclaimed works such as Life of Pi and Paranormal Activity, as well as producing the Oscar-winning film The Father.
Jenefer Brown, president of global products and experiences at Lionsgate, highlighted the story’s suitability for theatre, citing its compelling characters and tension-filled narrative that “naturally lends itself to the stage.”
Simon Friend described The Housemaid as “truly theatrical,” noting its single, claustrophobic setting and twisty plot elements that echo classic potboiler stage thrillers. He stressed the opportunity to heighten the story’s intensity in a live setting.
Bekah Brunstetter expressed enthusiasm for the adaptation, commenting on the novel’s universal themes of jealousy, desire, and trauma, and her excitement to explore these through theatre. Brunstetter’s credits include a Tony-nominated work on The Notebook and TV series such as This Is Us and Maid.
Lionsgate’s expansion into stage adaptations complements its existing theatrical projects, including The Hunger Games: On Stage in Canary Wharf and forthcoming productions of Dirty Dancing and a La La Land musical.
Alongside the stage adaptation, a sequel film based on the second book in McFadden’s trilogy is also in development, with production expected later this year and release planned for December 2027.
