Maria Friedman to lead UK premiere of award-winning musical Kimberly Akimbo

Maria Friedman will star in the European premiere of Kimberly Akimbo at Hampstead Theatre from 28 August to 7 November. This production marks Friedman’s return to the stage in the title role of a rare and acclaimed musical.

Maria Friedman is confirmed to play Kimberly Levaco in the UK premiere of Kimberly Akimbo at Hampstead Theatre. The performances will run from late August through early November, directed by Michael Longhurst. The musical tells the story of a 16-year-old girl living with a genetic condition that causes her to age four times faster than normal.

Written by David Lindsay-Abaire with music by Jeanine Tesori, Kimberly Akimbo had its debut in the United States and earned five Tony Awards in 2023, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. The narrative charts Kimberly’s navigation of adolescence under the shadow of her limited lifespan.

Friedman expressed enthusiasm for the role, describing Kimberly as “a beautifully complex character – full of hope, humour and this fierce determination to live every moment to the fullest.” She highlighted the character’s blend of comedy, heartbreak, and life-affirmation as a rare theatrical opportunity.

Director Michael Longhurst praised Friedman as “unquestionably one of our greats,” noting her previous Olivier Award nominations and wins. He described the casting as a perfect match for the Tony-winning score and book, promising an unforgettable performance.

Further details regarding the supporting cast and creative team will be announced in due course. Tickets for the Hampstead Theatre run are currently on sale.

This production adds to Hampstead Theatre’s commitment to staging innovative and acclaimed new works, offering London audiences a chance to experience a major American musical’s European debut.
