Mischief Theatre alumni premiere female friendship play Meat Cute in London

A new play by Mischief Theatre veterans Laura Kirman and Meg Travers will debut at The Other Palace Studio this June, exploring the complexities of female friendship. The production promises a fresh take on modern womanhood through a “platonic rom-com” lens.

Meat Cute, written and performed by Laura Kirman and Meg Travers, is set to premiere in London from 16 to 20 June at The Other Palace Studio. The play follows two women navigating the pressures and expectations placed on women in their 30s to “have it all together.”

Described as “a platonic rom-com about falling in friendship,” the piece tackles themes of modern womanhood with a focus on the genuine connection between the two lead characters. Kirman and Travers developed their relationship during their time working together on stage, bonding through candid moments behind the scenes.

The production will be directed by Nancy Zamit, with Jess Mabel Jones serving as associate creative director. Kirman, Travers, and Zamit share a history from their time with Mischief Theatre, where their creative collaboration first began.

Meat Cute marks a continuation of theatre practitioners from Mischief expanding their artistic reach beyond their initial comedic ensemble work. The play’s premiere adds to the growing interest in stories that examine contemporary relationships and the nuances of female friendship.

The Other Palace Studio, the chosen venue, is known for supporting innovative new works, making it a fitting location for the debut of this intimate and relatable exploration of friendship.
