One Day musical to open in West End this autumn with Jamie Muscato

The stage adaptation of David Nicholls’ One Day is set to open in the West End this autumn, following a preview run in Edinburgh. The production reunites WhatsOnStage and Olivier nominee Jamie Muscato with Sharon Rose in the leading roles.

One Day will begin its London season after a preview at Edinburgh’s Lyceum Theatre. The new musical, based on Nicholls’ 2009 novel, follows the evolving relationship of Emma and Dexter across multiple years, all set on St Swithin’s Day, 15 July.

The adaptation is penned by David Greig, featuring music and lyrics by Abner and Amanda Ramirez of the duo Johnnyswim, with additional material contributed by Jeremy Sams. The narrative traces the characters’ journey from students to adulthood, capturing the complexities of their long-term relationship.

The novel was previously adapted into a film in 2011, which was well received, and it inspired a popular Netflix series released in 2024. This new stage version offers a fresh interpretation of the story through music and drama.

Jamie Muscato, an Olivier Award nominee and respected theatre actor, reprises his role as Dexter. Sharon Rose, tipped as a name to watch in 2026, returns as Emma. Their casting was initially revealed by WhatsOnStage last July.

The production’s creative team and further details about the West End venue and exact dates are to be confirmed. This autumn opening will mark the first London run of the musical adaptation.

One Day joins a growing list of contemporary novels being reimagined for the stage, blending familiar narratives with original musical compositions.
