Paddington The Musical Wins Seven Olivier Awards Including Best New Musical
Paddington The Musical triumphed at the Olivier Awards on 12 April, securing seven prizes and emerging as the most awarded new musical of the year. The production’s success highlights its strong impact on this year’s theatre scene, particularly within a competitive field of musicals.
Paddington The Musical, playing at the West End’s Savoy Theatre, received 11 nominations at the Olivier Awards, tying with Into The Woods for the most nods among new musicals. Ultimately, it claimed seven trophies, including the prestigious Cunard Best New Musical award.
The British musical, created by Jessica Swale and Tom Fletcher, is directed by Luke Sheppard, who won the award for Best Director of a Musical. The production’s design team also featured prominently, with Gabriella Slade and Tahra Zafar jointly winning in the Costume Design category for their work on the costumes and bear respectively.
In the Best Set Design category, Tom Pye (set design) and Ash J Woodward (video design) were jointly recognised, reflecting the collaborative nature of the show’s visual elements. A notable achievement was the joint commendation of Arti Shah and James Hameed, the two performers who share the role of Paddington Bear, in the Best Actor in a Musical category.
Their win continues a recent Olivier precedent where multiple actors sharing a single character role, regardless of gender, are jointly awarded, echoing the multiple actors honoured for the tiger Richard Parker in Life of Pi. Meanwhile, Tom Edden and Victoria Hamilton-Barritt also triumphed with wins in acting categories, with Edden and Hamilton-Barritt picking up trophies for their performances.
Victoria Hamilton-Barritt was nominated for her portrayal of the villainous Millicent Clyde, while Tom Edden and Amy Booth-Steel, both nominated for their comedy roles, added to the production’s strong presence across acting awards. Earlier this year, Paddington The Musical dominated the WhatsOnStage Awards with nine wins, underlining its critical success.
This year’s Olivier Awards reflected a strong showing for musicals, particularly between Paddington The Musical and Into The Woods, demonstrating the vitality of new British musical theatre in the West End.
