Trainspotting The Musical to premiere in West End with Robbie Scott as Renton

Trainspotting The Musical will have its world premiere at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London, marking a new chapter for Irvine Welsh’s celebrated novel. Robbie Scott will make his West End debut in the lead role of Renton, with further casting yet to be announced.

The production is presented by Phil McIntyre Live and is written by Irvine Welsh, who co-created the music and lyrics alongside Stephen McGuinness. Caroline Jay Ranger directs and developed the show, which follows the characters Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy, and Kelly three decades after the 1996 film adaptation.

The film, starring Ewan McGregor, was the highest-grossing UK film of 1996, winning a BAFTA Award for Best Screenplay and securing a place on the British Film Institute’s list of the 100 greatest British films of the 20th century.

Robbie Scott’s casting as Renton marks his West End debut. The world premiere will open at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on Wednesday 15 July 2026, with tickets available from 8am on Tuesday 24 March. Additional cast members are expected to be announced in due course.

The musical aims to fuse the iconic soundtrack of the original film with new songs composed specifically for the stage. Irvine Welsh has described the show as having “a bigger, loudly beating human heart than either the book or the film,” offering an entertaining yet provocative reflection on contemporary life.

The creative team supporting Welsh and Ranger includes set and costume designer Colin Richmond, musical supervisor and director Stuart Morley, video designer Douglas O’Connell, choreographer Christina Andrea, lighting designer Ian Scott, and sound designer Rory Madden for Sonalyst. Denise Ranger serves as associate director, with casting directed by Anne Vosser.

Trainspotting The Musical continues the legacy and cultural impact of Welsh’s original work, offering a fresh theatrical interpretation that balances sharp social insight with moments of laughter and music.
