West End star Alison Jiear launches fundraiser for brain cancer surgery
West End performer Alison Jiear has revealed a diagnosis of glioblastoma and launched a fundraising appeal to cover private surgery costs. The procedure, planned for early November, could extend her life and improve quality of life.
Alison Jiear, known for roles in Jerry Springer: The Opera and Sister Act, disclosed her glioblastoma diagnosis following symptoms experienced aboard a Princess cruise ship. Initially suspected of having a stroke, further scans in the UK confirmed the aggressive brain tumour.
Jiear’s theatre career includes an Olivier Award nomination for Jerry Springer: The Opera in 2004 and appearances in Grease, Three Little Pigs, and the Les Misérables film adaptation. She also reached the Britain’s Got Talent semi-finals in 2015.
After being told the tumour’s location made surgery too risky, Jiear was later given the option of an operation, which she said may not cure her but could extend time with her children and maintain her quality of life.
The surgery is scheduled for 2 November, with the hospital requiring funds cleared by 30 October for the procedure to proceed. Jiear has called on supporters to help cover the costs.
The diagnosis has forced Jiear to cancel work engagements worth tens of thousands of pounds and has caused her family to face significant financial challenges. She reports paralysis in her left arm and impaired speech, complicating her communications.
Jiear’s fundraising efforts highlight the financial burdens faced by performing artists diagnosed with serious illnesses and the challenges of accessing life-extending treatment.
