Lead cast confirmed for The Harder They Come’s 2026 Stratford East return
The Harder They Come, the reggae musical adapted by Suzan-Lori Parks, has announced its lead cast for its scheduled 2026 return to Stratford East. With Natey Jones reprising his role as Ivan, the production is set to revisit the cult 1970s Jamaican tale that blends iconic Jimmy Cliff songs with new material.
Stratford East will host the return of The Harder They Come from 16 May to 4 July 2026, featuring lead performances from Natey Jones as Ivan and Madeline Charlemagne as Elsa until 6 June. Charlemagne will share the role with Chanice Alexander-Burnett, who takes over as Elsa from 8 June.
The musical is adapted by Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks from the cult 1970s Jamaican film of the same name. The story centres on Ivan, an aspiring singer arriving in Kingston with dreams of rising to music superstardom on his terms.
Directed by Olivier Award-winner Matthew Xia, the production was described as “a genuinely joyous production” by WhatsOnStage during its previous run at Stratford East last autumn. It features a soundtrack with hits by reggae legend Jimmy Cliff alongside new songs by Parks.
The creative team assembled for this return includes Simon Kenny (set design), Jessica Cabassa (costumes), Ciarán Cunningham (lighting), and Tony Gayle (live sound), among others. Choreography and intimacy direction is led by Shelley Maxwell, with musical direction by Ashton Moore.
Additional roles in the creative team include Gino Ricardo Green handling video design, Benjamin Kwasi Burrell as orchestrator, and Claire Llewellyn as fight director. Justine Henzell contributes as cultural consultant, reflecting the original film’s director Perry Henzell’s legacy.
The Harder They Come is presented by Stratford East in partnership with Washington Square Films, Joshua Blum, and Bruce Miller. The book is by Parks, with songs by Jimmy Cliff and new additions from Parks herself.
Further casting announcements are expected to follow as preparations continue for the production’s return to the London stage in 2026.
