Pulitzer-winning play Liberation set for London staging in 2027

The acclaimed play Liberation, which recently won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, will receive a London production in 2027. The announcement marks the continued momentum of this award-winning drama following its successful Broadway run.

Liberation, written by Bess Wohl and directed by Whitney White, will be presented in London in 2027, with the venue yet to be confirmed. It is produced by Broadway’s Daryl Roth, Eva Price and Rachel Sussman in association with UK-based Eleanor Lloyd Productions and Eilene Davidson Productions, known for works including the Sylvia tour and the upcoming Bloodsport: After Helen of Troy.

Set in 1970s Ohio, the play focuses on Lizzie, who gathers a group of women to discuss transforming their lives and society. The narrative later shifts to Lizzie’s daughter revisiting her mother’s memories and the movement she was part of in a quest for her own answers.

Liberation has received wide recognition, winning the Drama League Award for Outstanding Production of a Play, the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play, and honours from the Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics’ Circle for Best Ensemble Performance. It garnered five Tony Award nominations, including Best Play, with Wohl and White standing out as the only female nominees in the playwriting and directing categories this season.

Susannah Flood and Betsy Aidem received nods for Best Performance by a Leading Actress and Featured Actress respectively, while Qween Jean was nominated for Best Costume Design. The play had its Off-Broadway premiere at Roundabout Theatre Company before transferring to Broadway’s James Earl Jones Theatre, where it ran from October 2025 to February 2026.

Alongside the London engagement, Liberation is scheduled for multiple US productions in the 2026 to 2027 season, including appearances at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, Berkeley Rep in California and Studio Theatre in Washington, DC. Further venues are expected to be announced.

The forthcoming London run represents a notable step in the play’s expanding impact and visibility, building on its record-breaking Broadway success and critical acclaim.
