Cast announced for William Wallace hip hop musical touring Scotland in 2026
Wallace: A Musical has revealed its six-strong cast ahead of a Scottish tour in autumn 2026, marking a redeveloped large-scale return of the hip hop-infused production exploring the legacy of William Wallace. The show, produced by Raw Material, uses rap battles and contemporary storytelling to revisit Scottish history through a modern lens.
Wallace: A Musical is set to tour Scotland from 23 September to 3 October 2026, beginning with previews at the Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock followed by performances at Glasgow’s Pavilion Theatre and Edinburgh’s newly refurbished King’s Theatre. The production returns after its initial co-presentation at Oran Mor in September 2025, now expanded into a larger-scale show.
Produced by Raw Material, the show is directed by Orla O’Loughlin, with music and lyrics by Dave Hook and a book by Rob Drummond. The cast features a mix of returning performers, including Dave Hook, Patricia Panther, and Manasa Tagica, alongside newcomers Ross Mann, Kimberley Mandindo, and Madeline Grieve.
The musical blends hip hop, rap, folk, pop, and rock styles to explore William Wallace’s story and legacy, employing rap battles and storytelling to probe themes of national identity and historical ownership. Hook described hip hop as a form of folk music that reflects its surroundings, using language and dialect integral to Scottish life.
Drummond said he had always intended to create a show about Wallace but was surprised it would become a hip-hop musical, crediting his collaboration with Hook for bringing the concept alive. The play aims to reflect contemporary Scotland by re-examining both myth and man.
O’Loughlin highlighted the challenges of initially creating the show in just two weeks but cited the enthusiasm at Oran Mor as proof that the mix of mythology, history, drama, and comedy resonates strongly with audiences. The production has benefited from Raw Material’s recent recognition including nine CATS Award nominations spread across several shows.
Following this autumn’s dates, further 2027 performances are planned with support from the Creative Scotland Touring Fund. Specific dates for the following year are yet to be confirmed.
