Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd revival extends run at the Rep with Ramin Karimloo

The Rep’s new revival of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s Sweeney Todd has extended its run to mid-August 2026. The production, directed by Joe Murphy, features a high-profile cast including Ramin Karimloo and Meow Meow in key roles.

The multi-award-winning musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will now run until 16 August 2026, following its initial opening on 4 July. The show centers on the vengeful barber whose dark tale is brought vividly to life at the Rep with an acclaimed creative team.

Joe Murphy, the Rep’s artistic director, directs the production, with design by Elin Steele. Musical supervision is led by John Rigby, who also manages orchestral reduction, while casting duties have been handled by Abby Galvin.

Ramin Karimloo stars as the tortured barber, Sweeney Todd, with cabaret artist Meow Meow taking on the role of Mrs Lovett. Olivier Award-winner David Bedella appears as Judge Turpin, adding gravitas to the cast. Other principal roles include Shem Omari James as Anthony Hope and Jo Stephenson as Johanna.

The ensemble features Julius D’Silva as Beadle, Jack Gibson as Tobias Ragg, Florence Andrews as Beggar Woman, and Silas Wyatt-Barke as Adolfo Pirelli. Emily Ivana Hawkins and Hadrian Delacey complete the ensemble line-up.

Supporting the creative vision are lighting designer Rory Beaton, sound designer Kelsh Buckman-Drage, movement director Tinovimbanashe Sibanda, musical director Leo Munby, and orchestral manager David Gallagher. This assembly of talent underscores the production’s ambitious scale.

Sweeney Todd’s enduring appeal, driven by Sondheim’s score and Wheeler’s adaptation of Christopher Bond’s story, continues to captivate audiences. This extension reflects strong interest in a production that explores themes of revenge and justice through its gothic narrative.

The revival joins a rich tradition of Sweeney Todd performances that probe dark human emotions, with the Rep’s production updating the classic with a compelling cast and contemporary design elements.
