Jane Eyre musical casts leads for UK premiere at Southwark Playhouse

The Jane Eyre musical by John Caird and Paul Gordon has announced Charlie Burn and Ashley Gilmour as leads for its UK premiere, opening at Southwark Playhouse in August 2026. This marks the show’s return 30 years after its original debut, drawing renewed attention to Brontë’s classic story.

The musical Jane Eyre, adapted from Charlotte Brontë’s novel, will make its UK premiere at Southwark Playhouse Elephant from 28 August to 24 October 2026, with tickets now available. Charlie Burn will play Jane Eyre, and Ashley Gilmour will take on the role of Edward Rochester, with additional casting to be announced.

The production will be co-directed by John Caird, who co-created the show with composer Paul Gordon, and Megan McGinnis. Caird is well known for his work on Les Misérables both in the West End and on Broadway, and most recently directed the acclaimed stage adaptation of Spirited Away at the London Coliseum. McGinnis brings Broadway experience from shows including Beauty and the Beast, Little Women and Beetlejuice.

The musical follows Jane Eyre’s journey from orphanhood to adulthood as she becomes entwined with Rochester and the mysteries of Thornfield Hall, encompassing themes of danger, secrets and betrayal. Originally premiering in Toronto in 1996, the show transferred to Broadway in 2000 where it garnered five Tony Award nominations.

For its 30th anniversary, Adam Blanshay Productions is collaborating with original Canadian producers David and Hannah Mirvish to present the UK premiere, signalling a significant moment for the musical and its legacy. The production’s arrival in London offers a fresh opportunity to revisit Brontë’s enduring tale through a musical lens.
