Gaten Matarazzo and Mason Alexander Park star in Murder at the Gates concept album
A concept album for the new musical Murder at the Gates, featuring Gaten Matarazzo, Mason Alexander Park and Isa Briones, is set for release on 1 July 2026. The musical’s murder mystery story and revised contemporary take make it a notable addition to upcoming theatre projects.
Murder at the Gates, with book and lyrics by Steven Sater and music by James Bourne, centres on Cameron, whose father stages a murder mystery birthday party after the death of her mother and the end of her relationship with Ethan. Trouble brews when a fake murder appears to have turned real inside a gated American community.
The first track from the album, “F**kin’ Scream,” has been released and features Gaten Matarazzo as Graham. Matarazzo is also slated to star in the upcoming West End revival of Rent. Other cast members on the concept album include Mason Alexander Park, Isa Briones, Joy Woods, Helen J Shen, Casey Likes, Milo Manheim and Ramin Karimloo.
Sater reflected on the creative process, relating Murder at the Gates to his previous work: “Back in the day, when I was first conceiving Spring Awakening, I was urged to update the story to contemporary times. As I suspected, that didn’t work. But that energy spilled into Murder at the Gates, a black comic look at how totally effed life can be as a young person today.”
Early versions of Murder at the Gates were presented at New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2013, followed by rehearsed readings at the Other Palace in London in 2019 and a workshop with Madison Wells Media in New York City in 2024.
The album tracklist includes titles such as “Something That’s Sure,” “The Mirror Sighs,” “A Fine Rigor Mortis,” “Our Country Bleeds,” “Mortified,” and “No One Sits On High,” signalling a blend of dark humour and mystery.
The release of this concept album continues a trend of musicals exploring contemporary social tensions through unconventional narratives and offers a fresh view on youthful disaffection in the American landscape.
