Jesus Christ Superstar reveals star-studded Herod line-up for Drury Lane run

The Theatre Royal Drury Lane will host the autumn run of Jesus Christ Superstar featuring a rotating cast of nine high-profile actors as Herod alongside Sam Ryder reprising his role as Jesus. The announcement underlines the production’s star power and anticipated draw.

The eight Herods set to appear in the autumn transfer of Jesus Christ Superstar at Theatre Royal Drury Lane have been officially unveiled. Sam Ryder will return for his second stint as Jesus, joined by Desmonda Cathabel as Mary Magdalene, David Thaxton as Pontius Pilate, Bob Harms as Caiaphas, Matty J as Annas, and Phil King as Peter.

The Herod role will be shared by nine performers over the course of the 12-week run from October. Matt Bomer will lead from 16 to 31 October, followed by Rob Brydon (2–7 November), Reece Shearsmith (9–14 November), Bob The Drag Queen (16–21 November), Michael Ball (23 November–5 December), Simon Russell Beale (rescheduled from 7–12 December), Omid Djalili (14–19 December), and Layton Williams (21 December to 2 January 2027), who reprises his role from the London Palladium.

One final Herod casting for the last week of performances is yet to be announced. The production’s ensemble company features a large and diverse group, including Koko Alexandra, Jasmine Jules Andrews, Courtney Arango, Amy Barker, and others, supporting the lead and guest roles.

Ryder, preparing for his professional stage debut with the revival, previously described immersing himself in the West End by attending any available shows to learn and adapt quickly. His participation highlights the production’s blend of established theatre talent and rising stars.

The autumn season of Jesus Christ Superstar at Drury Lane promises to maintain the creative energy and high production values set by Tim Sheader’s 2026 staging. The approach of rotating headline performers is notable in drawing attention to the role of Herod as a showcase part.

Details about the full 12-week run and ticket availability have been released, though the complete Herod casting remains partially open. The move continues a trend of star-led theatre productions leveraging guest appearances to sustain audience interest throughout extended runs.
