Off-Broadway parody Heated Rivalry confirms UK cast and London run

Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody, an Off-Broadway hit inspired by the hockey drama series, has announced its UK premiere at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe followed by a London season. The production’s UK cast includes Zheng Xi Yong and Joseph Dann and marks a significant cultural moment for the playful parody.

Heated Rivalry: The Unauthorized Musical Parody will make its UK debut this summer at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, playing at Underbelly George Square. Following this, the show will transfer to London’s Underbelly Boulevard Soho from 7 October to 1 November.

The musical is written by Dylan MarcAurele, whose credits include Pop Off and Michelangelo!, and tells the story of Shane Hollander, a celebrated ice hockey star whose journey moves “from power centre to power bottom.” The show parodies the original Canadian sports romance television series while standing independently.

Director Alan Kliffer leads the production, which features Zheng Xi Yong as Shane Hollander and Joseph Dann as Ilya Rozanov. The cast also includes Andrew Berlin as Ilya’s Dad, Sylvie Stenson as Shane’s Mom, and May Tether as Main Susan.

The creative team boasts choreographers Brooke Engen and Tiffany Engen, set designer Sully Ross, costume designer Brendan McCann, lighting designer Devin Cameron, and sound designer Germán Martinez. Supporting roles behind the scenes include casting director Harry Blumenau and associate director Max Reynolds.

MarcAurele and Kliffer expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming UK runs, highlighting the positive reception of the New York production and their excitement to bring it to the Edinburgh Fringe and London audiences. They highlighted Soho as an ideal location for the London run.

Heated Rivalry’s UK runs come amid a burgeoning interest in parody musicals around the hockey drama, with several notable productions slated for the Edinburgh Fringe and venues including the Other Palace in London. The multiple adaptations suggest a growing cultural phenomenon focusing on this niche genre.

The production is presented by Klif Entertainment with general management by Wildpark Entertainment, consolidating its position as a notable entry in the growing field of satirical musical theatre.
