Jonathan Groff leads all-male RSC revival of As You Like It
The Royal Shakespeare Company has revealed full casting for its new all-male production of As You Like It, starring Tony Award-winning Jonathan Groff as Rosalind. Directed by co-artistic director Daniel Evans, the revival opens in Stratford-upon-Avon this autumn.
Jonathan Groff will take the role of Rosalind in the RSC’s reimagined all-male As You Like It, which runs in Stratford-upon-Avon from 26 September to 7 November, with press night on 6 October. The production is directed by Daniel Evans, who co-leads the company as artistic director.
Groff plays Rosalind, banished from the court of Duke Frederick, who falls in love with Orlando before fleeing to the Forest of Arden with her cousin Celia, portrayed by Fisayo Akinade. Elliot Barnes-Worrell joins as Orlando, while Gary Wilmot takes on the dual roles of Duke Frederick and Duke Senior.
Richard McCabe appears as Jaques, Greg Haiste as Touchstone, and the supporting cast includes Giles Cooper as Le Beau, Jamal Franklin and Steffan Hughes in the ensemble, alongside a wider company completing the company’s all-male configuration.
The creative team features Anisha Fields on set design, Colin Richmond on costumes, and Ryan Day on lighting. Music and sound are overseen by Theo Jamieson and Paul Groothuis respectively, with movement and fight direction led by Michela Meazza and Kev McCurdy.
Evans described the cast as a group capable of embracing “wit, singing and wrestling” for this production, expressing excitement to invite audiences into the Forest of Arden to explore “the transformational power of love.”
The revival joins the RSC’s ongoing experimentation with gender casting and creative reinterpretation of Shakespeare’s works, continuing its commitment to diverse theatrical storytelling.
