Adelphi Theatre plans self-service drinks area and accessible foyer revamp
The Adelphi Theatre in the West End has submitted detailed plans to redesign its foyer and exterior, including the introduction of a self-service drinks space and improved accessibility features. The changes aim to modernise the 1930 venue while addressing current visitor needs.
Proposals have been submitted for a comprehensive refurbishment of the Adelphi Theatre’s foyer and outward appearance. The design, created by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, includes a remodelled ticket office, a self-service drinks area intended to ease wait times, and a full-length canopy over the entrance facade.
The self-service drinks zone will sit adjacent to the cloakroom and is designed to complement the existing foyer bar. Features include slip-resistant vinyl flooring, a detail focused on safety in the newly functional space.
Crucially, the plans also incorporate accessibility improvements, notably a fully compliant wheelchair-accessible WC and an additional toilet next to the auditorium. A new ramp will span the full width of the foyer entrance, widening access from the Strand and replacing the current arrangement of just one door set.
The Adelphi, opened in 1930 and now co-owned by LW Theatres and the Nederlander Organization, has a rich history hosting well-known productions like Waitress, Kinky Boots, The Bodyguard and Cats. The proposed works will come after the scheduled closure of Back to the Future the Musical in 2026.
If approved, construction is scheduled to begin in April 2026 and conclude by July of the same year. The timing allows for a thorough transformation without interrupting current productions.
As far as industry records show, no West End venue currently offers a fully integrated self-service drinks area akin to popular wine bars outside theatre. The nearby Savoy Theatre does have an automated Moet and Vandon vending machine, but this new facility would be more comprehensive.
The Adelphi’s revamp reflects an ongoing trend among London theatres to enhance audience experience through better facilities and increased inclusivity, recognising evolving customer expectations in the post-pandemic era.
