Kristin Scott Thomas to lead new West End production of The Cherry Orchard

Kristin Scott Thomas is set to star in a new West End revival of Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard at the Harold Pinter Theatre. The production reunites the Olivier-winning actor with director Ian Rickson and offers a fresh adaptation by Conor McPherson.

Kristin Scott Thomas will return to the West End in a limited season of The Cherry Orchard, running from 3 October 2026 to 9 January 2027 at the Harold Pinter Theatre. The production is adapted by Conor McPherson, who reunites with director Ian Rickson for this new staging of the Chekhov classic.

Produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, the revival marks a notable collaboration between Scott Thomas and Rickson, who previously worked together on The Seagull. That production played in London and on Broadway and earned Scott Thomas the Olivier Award for Best Actress for her role as Arkadina.

Scott Thomas described returning to the Pinter Theatre with Chekhov as “like coming home to a piece of theatre that is endlessly alive.” She also praised McPherson’s adaptation for bringing “a fresh, urgent energy” to the play and expressed excitement about exploring Chekhov’s examination of the human heart with Rickson.

The creative team for this production includes set designer Chloe Lamford, lighting designer Bruno Poet, movement director Shelley Maxwell, and casting director Amy Ball. Additional details about the production are yet to be announced.

Tickets for The Cherry Orchard go on general sale from 12pm today, signalling early anticipation for this high-profile revival. The collaboration between Scott Thomas, Rickson and McPherson highlights continued interest in reinterpreting Chekhov’s work for contemporary audiences.
